Commerce and the Market in Lanark - South Lanarkshire

Lanark - South Lanarkshire is found in central Scotland. The name means clear space glade. This is a small county town that is mainly a commuter town to nearby Glasgow. There is still plenty of agriculture in the area and you can still buy livestock at the auction market outside of Lanark.

This town was very important during medieval times as it was a market town. The town was established specifically to develop commerce and trade and was given some mercantile privileges that were not held at other towns. Around the market are all the merchant shops and this ring of commerce became known as feus. You can still see the old layout in Lanark.

New Lanark is a world heritage site nearby. This village was founded by David Dale and there was mainly used to house the mill works. This village is right on the river which led to the development of cotton mills. The mills stopped operating in 1968 and the conservation trust was founded to preserve the village. Today it is a major tourist attraction in Scotland.

The Falls of Clyde are 4 waterfalls just outside of town. The four falls are Dindaff Linn, Bonnington Linn, Stonebyres Linn and Corra Linn. The falls are located in a nature reserve and you can enjoy the many walks and paths through the wood. You can see many birds, deer, badgers and a pair of peregrine falcons, which have a special viewing spot.

If you are nearby then you should not miss the Lanark Lanimer Day celebrations. There is a parade on that Monday night called the perambulation of the marches as the townspeople walk around the town's border. There is a Gala king and queen who are crowned under the statue of William Wallace. There is a reception afterwards held in the memorial hall. This is a great way to learn about the area's history and have a lot of fun.
