Effective time management increases productivity, decreases stress, Got2b glued benefits health and increases the quality of life - 4 good reasons to review these time management tips.
It can feel overwhelming to deal with:
a desk piled high with projects to attend to
interruptions from coworkers
emails and phone calls to answer
Here is a list of time management tips to help you make the most of your time:
prioritize and plan - each day write a list of tasks with the most important tasks at the top of the list
keep a calendar to keep track of appointments and meetings - leave a little time between appointments so you are not constantly feeling rushed
keep your goals in mind and remember you do not always have to agree to taking on additional work
delegate - let go of thinking you have to control each task and project
focus your attention on one thing at a time - your work will improve and you will not have to do things over again due to mistakes made by multitasking
evaluate how you are spending your time - keep a diary of everything you do for three days to see how you can use time more wisely
limit distractions - leave your office to work on projects so that you will not be interrupted by people, the telephone and e-mails
take care of yourself - make sure you eat healthy foods, exercise and get enough sleep
take a break during the day - a short walk will help you to clear your mind and be more mindful of your work
take a time management course - these skills may not come naturally, some guidance can be helpful
It may seem counterintuitive to spend time thinking about time management when we already feel there is not enough time to do what we have to do. It does take time to learn these skills, but in the long run we save time over and over again when we learn how to prioritize projects, delegate tasks, organize and plan each day.
It may also seem counterintuitive to do one thing at a time, when multitasking is not only how we have been taught to work, but is also considered a skill needed to find a job.
Being mindful of what and how we do our work, and focusing on doing one task at a time will assure that the work is done well and will also reduce stress.
